If this web site they ended up in is also selling similar products as you or also has a blogging site similar to yours then you just drove your traffic to them. They may not find you when entering the site name on the bar but your website can come up if they enter the domain keywords on Google.

After choosing which domain you want to use you also have to figure out which suffix to use. Some suffix include the dot com, dot biz, dot gov among many others. The most common of all of course is the dot com. This does not mean that your website will not be found if you use dot biz. This can still be an option if the domain you wanted is taken under the suffix dot com.
