Copywriting As A Writing Career

Have you been thinking about starting a writing career? Don't overlook copywriting. You can still enjoy being creative with your writing, while making a good income. You can get started earning money fairly quickly, and a good copywriter can make a six-figure salary or higher. Take a look at these three tips to help get you started.

1. Remember that you're writing to persuade. Copywriters write sales and marketing materials. These materials can consist of anything from tiny ads to complete video scripts, and even product manuals.

Most copywriting experts focus on a specific area of specialty. You might go into direct response advertising, or copywriting for websites. You can learn "on the job". As your skills improve, you'll take on larger jobs, and pick up larger clients. The higher the quality you provide, the higher your fees can be.

2. Understanding yourself can help you get into the mind of your audience. A clear knowledge of what makes you take action, and how you get motivated, can help you tap into the emotional triggers of your prospects.

Keep in mind though, although you'll gain a basic understanding of psychology, you must be honest. Just because you may be able to sell a product doesn't mean you should. If you think the product falls short, it's better to turn down the project.

3. Your potential customers are really only interested in themselves. So, you'll need to find and push the proper buttons to get them to take action. Remember the saying, "What's in it for me". Always keep your prospect's interests up-front, not your own.

The whole purpose of copywriting is to get your prospective buyer to take a certain action. Whether you want him to buy a product, join a list, or simply click a link, your copy should lead him to the step you want him to take. If it doesn't, you didn't do your job. Create an irresistible offer with a strong call-to-action so the prospect can't say no.

If you remember these three tips: you're writing to persuade, psychology is important, and that you need to include calls to action in everything you write, you'll soon develop your copywriting career.
