Get Free Publicity By Speaking To Local Groups -- How To Find Them
Giving talks to local groups and clubs is a great way to get free publicity. One of the reasons it is so helpful is that the people in the audience get to know you better. You're not a stranger anymore. It also establishes you as an expert on the topic, which makes people more likely to want to do business with you.
Okay, so you like the idea of giving talks to get publicity, but where do you find groups that might be interested?
You can find groups that might be interested on the Internet and in the phone book. One of the best ways to get information on local clubs is to call the Chamber of Commerce in your community and nearby ones.
Most chambers are extremely helpful, though often shorthanded, and keep lists of clubs in the community. Ask them for contact information for the groups you would like to speak to. While you're at it, ask the chamber if they are looking for speakers.
Many chambers have links to their member organizations on their websites, but again, usually to the contact person, not the group as a whole.
Most groups have a contact person listed with the chamber. Call that person and ask who books the speakers. It is usually someone else, either the president or another volunteer.
Warning: these positions turn over quite often, so you may end up calling several people to find the right one. When you determine who the current speaker booker is, call them to see if they are interested in the topic you want to speak about. They will probably ask to see a written proposal that includes some background information on you.
It's important to have two or three subjects to pitch. If they don't like one of them, they might pick another. Your pitch to them doesn't have to be elaborate. Most of the speaker bookers will accept a few paragraphs about your topic that cover the keypoints, though they may have to check with the president or a board. Most will let you send an email pitch.
